A seasonally varying biotope at Signy Island, Antarctic: implications for meiofaunal structure OMA
Vanhove, S.; Beghyn, M.; Van Gansbeke, D.; Bullough, L.W.; Vincx, M..
Under the typical high-latitude conditions of temperature, productivity and settlement of chlorophyll and phaeophytin to the sediment, many benthic organisms in the Antarctic show strong seasonal variation. Although meiofauna comprise an important component of the southpolar benthic ecosystem, our knowledge of them is limited. The metazoan meiofauna and the surrounding sediments were studied fortnightly for 18 mo in a shallow bay at Signy Island (Factory Cove, South Orkneys, Antarctica) to test whether and how the temporal variability of the environment influenced meiobenthos dynamics. By examination of the distribution of the abundance and biomass of the total community, the density of higher taxonomic groups, and of individual dominant nematode genera...

Moal, Jeanne; Samain, Jean-francois; Bodoy, Alain; Le Coz, Jean-rene.
The energy charge was measured for two Crassostrea gigas populations, during an annual survey at Marennes Oleron, to appreciate the condition of health of these oysters. It is assumed that the actual decrease in production of this area is related to a biomass overload which affects the oysters by lowering their scope for growth. Energy charge, an index developped by ATKINSON (1968), defines the energy equilibrium of organisms. It is the adenylic nucleotide ratio: E.C = (ATP + 1/2ADP)/ATP + ADP + AMP). We have measured this parameter to determine the state of health of these oysters. A methodological study has been conducted previously to define the conditions of sampling, conservation and extraction for a HPLC assay. The HPLC method (high performance...

Dato, C.V.; Villarino, M.F.; Cañete, G.R..
To improve the quality of the resource assessment it is necessary to estimate discards and quantify them applying an adequate methodology. The purpose of this work is to detect areas where the activity of the commercial fleet coincides with zones of high concentration of juveniles because they are potential discard areas. To establish possible seasonal and/or interannual variations, length distribution data derived from hake research surveys carried out on board of INIDEP vessels during the 1986-1993 period were analyzed. Samples were grouped per statistical rectangle on the basis of catch weighted average and mean, variance, skewness and kurtosis were calculated. The resulting parameters were subjected to a cluster analysis using the Euclidean distance...

Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Heral, Maurice; Masse, H.
An energy budget has been evaluated for a natural population of Crepidula fornicata living at low water of spring tides in the oyster farming basin of Marennes-Oleron. This budget of production was estimated according to the position along the chain. The average biomass for an individual representative of the population was equivalent to 1.87 Kjoules, and the annual consumption C was 20.08 Kjoules/year. The energy budget expressed in percent of energy consummates was: C = Pg + Pr + Ps + R + F; 100 = 4.6 + 1.6 + 0.8 + 48 + 45. This budget is compared with literature data on other herbivorous gastropods and with those calculated for Crassostrea gigas in the same locality.

ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Razet, Daniel; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Berthome, Jean-paul; Garnier, J..
Four seasonal compaigns providing a sampling of 15 stations each followed during half a tide cycle, i.e. 120 water samples permit the definition of the main hydrobiological features of Marennes-Oleron Bay: salinity and turbidity, phytoplanktonic biomasses, ATP concentrations. The authors suggest that a new way of adapted sampling to their objectives, will work out in the future by sampling during tidal cycles but as frequently as possible.

Determination of seasonal phytoplankton communities, based on quantitative data using a mathematical analysis OMA
Caljon, A..
The definition of algal communities has always been a very discussed subject. We applied a principal component analysis on quantitative phytoplankton data. This ordination technique made it possible to distinguish the algal groups present. This technique is very often applied in the phytosociology of higher plants but less frequently in the phytosociology of algae. Till now this ordination has been used in phycology, merely for marine- and freshwater benthic algae, e.g. the benthic diatoms of rivers (Descy 1976a, b).

Die Hydroiden der Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta (Kolumbien) und einiges zu ihrer Ökologie OceanDocs
Wedler, E..

Silva, R.I..
Ultraphytoplankton is composed by a group of organisms phylogenetically diverse, which contribute significantly to the total biomass and primary production in different oceanic and coastal pelagic systems. The success of ultraphytoplankton is attributed to its high efficiency in capturing light and nutrients, due to their small cell size and low sinking rate. The community structure is driven by the interaction among biotic and abiotic variables, such as temperature, nutrients, light and predators. The objective of this work was to assess the ecological importance of ultraphytoplankton organisms at the EPEA station, situated in the Buenos Aires coastal pelagic system (Argentina, SW Atlantic), during the period 2000-2009. In particular, ultraphytoplankton...

In zones of high productivity and/or in shallow waters (frontal or upwellings areas, bays and estuaries) the hydromedusae can reach exceptional abundances, denominated 'blooms'. Occasionally, these exceptional abundances are originated from some few individuals that constitute a 'seed population', which is retained in particular places while the environmental conditions are adverse. Liriope tetraphylla is a holoplanktonic and oceanic hydromedusae that often is found forming dense aggregations, which are developed mainly in the Buenos Aires coast during the summer in Argentinian waters (SW Atlantic). The temporal-space distribution and the abundance of L. Tetraphylla in the Subantarctic region were analyzed, with 1458 samples embracing the Argentinian and...

Dynamics of a macroalgal rocky intertidal community in the colombian Caribbean OceanDocs
García, C.B.; Díaz-Pulido, G..
The macroalgal intertidal community at a tropical location (Punta de la Loma, Colombian Caribbean) was monitored at irregular intervals from 1992 to 1995. The highly diverse macroalgal community was relatively invariant in cover, taxa and biomass from small spatial scales (square centimeters). At larger spatial scales (square meters), however, there was a small but definitive seasonal pulse in dominance and composition. Sand intrusions over the rocky intertidal represents a strong disturbance reducing macroalgal cover during the dry season. Interannual variation was also detected. La Punta de la Loma appears to be influenced by the regional upwelling conditions.

Sato, N.E..
Studied the effect of the predation of Noctiluca scintillans, Sagitta friderici and larvae of Engraulis anchoita in planktonic community of the coastal waters off Buenos Aires province from samples obtained of a permanent station EPEA (38°28’ S, 57°41’ W, 48 m depth) from March 2000 through April 2001. The composition of the diet of the three species predators considering appearances quantitative and qualitative was determined. It found that N. scintillans consumed mainly diatoms and copepod eggs. The alimentary index varied between 27.50% and 77.00%. The highest value corresponded to September, 2000. The analyses of the diets of S. friderici and of the larvae of E. anchoita indicated that both consume mainly different stages of development of the same...

Effect of environmental and nutritive conditionings on defense mechanisms of oyster Crassostrea gigas during an annual cycle ArchiMer
Delaporte, Maryse; Moal, Jeanne; Soudant, Philippe; Lambert, Christophe; Pouvreau, Stephane; Enriquez, Martha; Degremont, Lionel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Ropert, Michel.
In the frame of MOREST project, a common biological material, resulting of a mixture of different families produced in experimental hatchery, was reared in two different environmental fields : Normandy and Charente. Concomitantly, a pool was conditioned at the Ifremer Argenton hatchery with three different algae levels : 4%, 8% and 12% of algal dry weight per oyster dry weight. During the experiments, five immune parameters were studied in parallel with survival rate and reproductive status (stages and intensity). Site location, seasonal variations and experimental diet level clearly influenced oyster immune parameters. Haemocyte counts were higher for oysters reared in Normandy than those reared in Charente and in hatchery. Granulocyte percentage was...
